5 Tips for Beautiful Family Photos in the Rain
Yes—rainy photo sessions can be magical (especially in Alaska!).
Rain in the forecast? Don’t cancel—embrace it.
In places like Ketchikan and Southeast Alaska, rain is part of the charm and often a given. And while it might not seem ideal at first, some of my favorite family photos have been taken in the drizzle, under moody skies, or with puddle-loving toddlers in tow.
With a little planning (and the right mindset), rainy day sessions can be just as beautiful—and even more memorable—than clear skies.
Here are 5 tips to help you enjoy a photo session in the rain and get stunning images your family will love.
1. Dress for the weather, not just the camera
The key to enjoying a session in the rain is staying warm and comfortable. That might mean cozy layers, waterproof boots, or a cute raincoat you normally wouldn’t think to wear in photos.
Tip: Earth tones, deep greens, and soft neutrals photograph beautifully in misty light. Avoid bright white (it can glare when wet) or overly bulky coats unless they add to the look.
2. Incorporate clear or neutral colored umbrellas
A clear umbrella is a rainy day photographer’s best friend! It lets light through (which makes your skin glow) and keeps the focus on your faces—not the umbrella. Neutral-colored or transparent ones also help keep the mood soft and timeless.
Pro Tip: I always bring a couple of clear umbrellas with me—just in case you don’t have one packed.
3. Let the kids play (seriously!)
Rainy sessions are especially magical for kids. Splashing in puddles, catching raindrops, jumping in their boots—this is where the candid joy really shines. Don’t worry about keeping them spotless. Some of the most heartwarming photos come when we let go of the “perfect” and capture the real.
Tip: Pack a towel and a change of clothes for after the session so everyone stays happy.
4. Embrace the moody light
Cloudy skies make for incredibly flattering, soft lighting—no squinting, no harsh shadows, just soft, dreamy skin tones and cozy atmosphere. Rain adds movement, emotion, and depth. In a place like Alaska, it’s not a flaw—it’s part of the story.
Bonus: Mist in the background? That’s nature’s soft filter.
5. Trust your photographer
If you’ve booked a session with me, know this: I’ve photographed families in every kind of weather. I know how to adjust the session flow, work quickly when needed, and make sure your family feels at ease—rain or shine.
We’ll pick a location that offers natural shelter or tree cover if needed, and I’ll guide you every step of the way to make the most of what the day gives us.
Hint: Some of the best photo stories come from things not going “perfectly.”
Rain doesn’t ruin the memory—It makes it
Family photography in Alaska isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection, wonder, and documenting real moments in wild, beautiful places.
If the skies open up on your session day in Ketchikan, don’t worry. Lean into it. Let the raindrops fall, hold your people close, and know that what we’ll capture together is uniquely yours.
